As a student recipient of the Michael D. Schermer Student Leader Excellence Scholarship I have realized the impact that the generous donors have on Illinois State University. Michael D. Schermer serves as an amazing role model for all students. He was very much involved during his time at Illinois State as the Associate Dean of Students and even had time for an abundance of service where he helped the community. This scholarship is very beneficial to the university and it enables students to become the future models for new students to use their talents not only to become great leaders at Illinois State, but to also give back to the community and our country. Throughout my short time at Illinois State University, this scholarship has given me the inspiration to get involved. It has promoted my aspirations to become a leader and to become involved even as a freshman within the student population. During my first semester I have participated on the cheerleading squad, joined a business fraternity, and also provided service to the community.

Beginning with tryouts in April of 2011 I have become a part of the cheerleading game squad at Illinois State University. From the start of my time at Illinois State I have been involved with a great organization and team with many wonderful leaders and role models. Adjusting from high school to college level cheerleading was a great challenge for me; however, with the help of my superior coaches and supportive teammates we have combined the talents of fifty individuals to bring spirit and skill to the football, basketball, and volleyball games. Cheerleading has been a large part of my life and I put in many hours and work to help our team succeed. This sport has taught me to work on a team and to try my best in all situations.

Also, throughout this semester I was a pledge for the professional business fraternity Delta Sigma PI. This organization has been extremely beneficial to me as a person and as a student aspiring to earn a degree in Business Administration. Through interviews and the pledging process I have grown with confidence and also have increased both my professional and leadership skills. Furthermore, through this organization I have met over seventy incredibly driven individuals who are superb role models for all students. In this organization we expect the highest of standards and work towards our goals. Through Delta Sigma Pi, I have also been able to give back to the community through service projects such as Trick-or Treat for Change to benefit Habitat for Humanity, cleaning the Constitution Trail, and also by volunteering at the Chicago Marathon. Through these experiences I have grown with leadership and confidence.

The Michael D. Schermer Student Leader Excellence Scholarship has been very beneficial in my life. It has inspired me to become involved and to use my talents to also improve the organizations I am part of and the community as a whole.
